Many of the Native American Tribes had/have people they called Two Spirit.  These people were often part of the LGBTQ Community.  Duality I & II are both part of that thought process.  The combination of Yin and Yang. The mixture of female spirit and male spirit and however that works for each person. In the Native American community, a lot of the Two Spirit people were/are highly regarded as Shamans, healers and ceremonial leaders. The concept of Two Spirit/Yin and yang can be thought of as complementary (rather than opposing) forces that interact to form a dynamic system in which the whole is greater than the individual parts. The yin yang shows a balance between two opposites with a portion of the opposite element in each section. So in these paintings, the black and white duality symbolizes that combined spirit system - the blending of male and female in one body.
